Looking Out From the Garage: Kids + Crocs + Escalators = BAD

Kids + Crocs + Escalators = BAD

Just sitting here listening to the Neal Boortz show and I heard something that surprised me.  Belinda (Neal's producer, and one of the people that keeps him in line) had something very bad happen to her son at the airport on the escalator.  While riding up it, his foot was sucked into the side and trapped.  He will recover, but is having to undergo multiple surguries to fix the damage to his foot.  The further mentioned that there have been several incidents with kids just in the last couple of weeks at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport.

That kind of struck me, so I Googled Crocs and escalators.

The news isn't good...  Consumer Reports, on their blog, has a story from May 20th about the dangers of Crocs on escalators.  What shocked me even more was that CBS News had a story about this almost a year ago.

Right now (literally as I write this) there is an escalator out of service at Hartsfield because of a similar incident this morning.

It isn't just airports, either, but shopping centers and other places with escalators.

Yikes!  I'll have to watch out for that when I wear the things!  Thanks for the alert.

thank goodness, they're ugly - maybe people will stop wearing them!!!

Sounds like people need to keep a better eye on their children in addition to rethinking what they are wearing. It just seems so simple to prevent and it is a damn shame that accidents like this are still happening every day.

Lane, very interesting about those Crocs. I see all sort of people wearing them.

Lane - kids and escalators have been a problem for a long time, loose clothing getting stuck on the steps and getting sucked under. Flip flops used to do the same thing.

I heard about crocs and escalators about a year ago.  My kiddo's don't wear them, nor do they wear flip flops.

That made me hurt just watching that newscast.  Everyone should be very careful.

I didn't watch the video - I caught my foot many years ago while wearing flip flops. I was lucky - no real damage. I was more embarrassed than anything.

We all wear lace up shoes when traveling or going somewhere with an escalator. (I pretty confident there isn't one escalator in our entire county, so were pretty safe!)

Thank you all...  We don't have a single pair of Crocs in this household... they're kind of seriously ugly... but thought I would pass it along.  Obviously there are other shoes that this could be an issue with... and I have to admit that I almost had a stroke I laughed so hard when a punk with droppy pants got caught in an escalator and his pants got pulled down... where is the video when you need it...

But seriously, watch your kidlets and keep them in the middle of the escalator
