Looking Out From the Garage: How are people using their mobile devices?

How are people using their mobile devices?

I have had a wide variety of people in the car lately.  Through volunteering for the NHL, I have been interacting with some players, owners, musicians and others.  Oddly, there is one thing I have noticed that I hadn't seen previously...

Note band guy texting in lower centerTexting.

Seriously.

Players that are 23 years old are sitting in the van pounding out text after text since they spent the previous few hours on a plane.  60 year old executives are doing the same thing.  The 40 year old and 25 year old musicians were in the same mode... and everyone in between.

The only threads that carried between these people is that they are busy, successful and not in their home area.  But, they were of a variety of ages, races, nationalities and economic strata.  Agents, players, owners, retired players, celebrities... all of them were texting more than calling.

I have been hearing about it... and doing it some.  But, the level that I have seen over the last few days has been surprising.

And do you know what?

I wish they were texting our assignments.  It would have been so much easier than getting the call and writing everything down.  I know that the Nextels are great for keeping in touch fast, but I wonder if texting would be more efficient, leaving the voice calls for confirmation and problem solving.

So, I think that my real estate business is going to be involving texting more and more...  email to text message could be a seriously cool tool...  I'm not that fast with the thumb pad.

**If you didn't notice, the guy in the hat in the forground is sending a text...**

Aawww......don't let the keyboard scare you - once you get the hang of it you will sending those messages out like crazy!  There is a lot of text messaging here in Raleigh area.  For me, I can get a point across really quick.

It doesn't take long to get going but really be careful using one hand to text and the other to drive ;-)

Leesa - I'm not scared of the keyboard.  I use it all of the time.  I'm just not fast...

Julie - Not going to do that.  I'll write the texts at red lights...

Hi Lane..yes we could be checking on posts on AR and commenting by text messaging. I read an article in our newspaper today saying Japanese Women have been born into cell phones and text messaging and are writing novels and texting to friends to read on their cell phones..I guess we're next.

Cheers, have a great day!

Fred - Not typing a novel here... even with a full size keyboard, much less with a thumb board.

Lane - I'm a texting fool, I'm certain that it will become more prominent in our business as time grows on.

Jason - I think you are right on.  Of course there have been a lot of voices in that choir.  But, I see the best use of texting for real estate as updates and letting people know that a step is completed, or that something specific needs to be done.

We use texting in our business.  It saves us a tremendous amount of time.  It's faster for our call center to communicate to our field teams and for the local operations to do so also.  We also use GPS to track our trucks so we don't have to call them up and say "where are you"?

I use a Palm Treo and its pretty easy to text on since it has a QWERTY pad....

Eric - I have a qwerty pad on my T-Mobile MDA.  I love that.  I already think it would be a good idea to do updates on properties under contract via text.

You will find your clients greatful for the time savings. Not every little thing needs to be done via a call. A simple text is totally adequate.

Sarah - I agree.

I'm a HUGE fan of text messaging.  I learned about 6 months before it came really popular in the US.  I spend 6 months in New Zealand going to college and EVERYONE there was using it. It's much cheaper to send text messages there than make a phone call, so that's how everyone kept in touch.  I came here, and about 6 months later it started to become popular.  I LOVE IT.  The funny this is, now I work for a text message marketing company and I just happened upon it!!!  My friends sometimes get annoyed that I text so much - but I really think they are jealous that I'm way faster :)  Great post, Lane!!!

Erika - I have had texting capabilities on my last several phones, going back to my retail management life.  Back in 2001 and 2002, AT&T used to allow texts for free.  My wife almost never called me at work, but would send texts to me from her computer.  Then they started charging and she stopped doing it.

Got out of the habit...

Guilty as charged!

Not only am I'm texting I am also banging out email with my portable laptop with a built in cellular card while putting directions in my nav system all while taking with my bluetooth headset. If I ever get wet I will be electrocuted

Happy Selling!

Tony - Not to mention that if you are doing it at a traffic light your going to get run over by a guy in a dually...

I bang out the emails and texts on my phone and have GPS in the van...

Texting is great, I communicate with my oldest daughter while she is at school.  It's a converstion I would not have had otherwise.  Some days I cheer up other days she adds a smile to my face.
