Looking Out From the Garage: How many blog posts do I need for a book?

How many blog posts do I need for a book?

I was just noticing that several of the people that have commented on my blog have written, or are writing books.

I have 72 posts here, and a few that didn't make it here that I have on other venues.  I also have a few published articles on Ezine... and I have a few more in the pipe.  As you can tell from looking at my previous posts (OK, not the one about the kid and the dog) I can be pretty verbose.

So, should I write a book?  In my previous life I was a published photographer, and published magazine author... but that was all travel and 4wd related stuff.

It would be fun to be able to have my books listed on Amazon, and available for sale through my website.

Lane,

If your thinking about it then just do it. Write your book!

Verbose is a gift! Use it to it's full potential. Compile your blogs, start new ones, whatever. I always envy people who have this gift because it is something I once thought I would be able to do. Go for it.

Lane, this is the first blog that I read about you, and by all means do it! Writing is a skill that not all people have. If you can post 72 blogs and express yourself to the world then it shouldn't stop you from writing a book. When your book gets published, write a blog about it and let us know.

Karen, you still can.  If I can, anyone can... but I guess i haven't yet.

John, I was talking about my pre-real estate life.  You might have guessed that.

Diana, Feel free to come back often.

Keep your day job!  My wife is a novelist - quite successful.  And you would go broke trading your commissions for royalties.  In the very unlikely situation that you found a publisher.

Lane

The magic # is 200. You're almost half way there! j/k

Seriously though, writing a book is a lot of work, a lot of fun, and a great opportunity to share your thoughts with a much larger audience. You notice I don't speak about the money....its good when it leads to speaking events, publicity, etc. Books are like music....everyone else gets paid first, but still well worth it if you have a topic that others want to hear about.

Give it a shot, and see if you can get someone to help you self-publish, though going with a major brand is a much better way, until you have a few books under your belt!

Best of luck.....get over here into the world of authors and writers! Its a great world to be in.......

Well if nothing else, all would be writers can go to blurb.com and create their own little book. May not be published but nice looking on the coffee table.

Hey Lane. Another thought - you could convert your blog into an e-book and give it away for free to your prospects. This way, it's also "viral" and has the ability to reach many more people.

I wrote one!  It was a total, absolute blast!
One thing, you don't write a book to sell books.  You write a book to sell something else - in my case it's houses.
A client who moved out to Arizona called me tonight out of the blue, laughing because he recognized a friend of his (the friend who refered him to me) in one of the chapters.  And he gave me another referral.
It's a great thing to give away at listing presentations.  And you get to be on TV and radio a lot!

I think Ilyce has a great suggestion. It is easier to give something for free than to sell it.

Sounds like you're already started Lane, good luck with the book. Shouldn't take much more time now....

Not quitting the day job, and if I do put together a book, it won't be about the money, but rather about the information... and the exposure.  And it will take a lot more than some blog posts to make it happen... but if I do it, you'll see the vast majority of the material here first.

Don't listen to the naysayers!  Go for it.  Of course, when it comes right down to it, only YOU can answer your own question.  Just do it - what is there to lose.  When our lives come to an end, it will be the things we didn't do, the "what might have been" and "if only" that will haunt us.
