We've all been talking about Posterous. It is a seriously cool site. In fact, I have enjoyed using it so much that I am going to start up another Posterous blog to cover personal things going on (like vacation next week). It is a GREAT platform.
But it isn't the only platform. In fact, before there was Posterous, there was Tumblr. And they are very similar. Similar enough that many think that Posterous took direct aim at Tumblr when they introduced their platform.
There are some things that Posterous has done VERY well... to start with, the emial post capability of Posterous is amazing. I'm not going to run over all of the options... it is another post... but let's just say that you can upate any combination of Flickr, FaceBook, Twitter, YouTube, your own blog and/or Posterous with one email. In fact, I would say that Posterous is one of the best syndication tools available. With just a couple of clicks from your mobile phone, you can syndicate content all over the web...
Tumblr has moved the other direction. It is a great aggregation tool. You can pull in content from 5 or more sources to one place. That is a very nice option. It is one of the best aggregators available. But there is something else that Tumblr does better than Posterous (although there is erosion there). That comes down to "the look". Tumblr has great theme options. Posterous has made their platform (kind of) compatible with the Tumblr themes, but they aren't quite there yet... yet.
The bottom line is that both platforms are pretty cool. They both do much the same thing, but they do it differently and with different strengths and weaknesses.

Hi Lane - were you peeking over my shoulder last night when I was playing around on both programs? I had used Posterous before but forgot about it until a seminar yesterday at our RE/MAX Kickstart sales rally.
I then stumbled on to Tumbler also and realized that I already had an account there. So I goofed around on them both. Your description of the two is great.
Tumblr sounds like a tool that would work really well for me. I need to manage my time wisely.
Hi Lane. Can you comment on how well these blogging platforms perform with regard to Google Juice? Granted I only posted a couple of times on Posterous, but never saw any results. With Active rain, the results are quick and very good. I am certainly open to keep trying, but you have used this more and would be in a better position to judge the results you're getting. Thanks.
Hi Lane, thanks for the reminder about Tumblr. I too had opened an account ages ago but never did anyything with it. I'll have to go back and take another look.
whoa whoa Lane, I barely get to my Posterous blog and you want me to add more ;) Thanks for making us away of another "lane" in the online world.

Lane,
Are you ahead of the crowd? We are trying to warm up to Posterous, and you are talking about Tumblr? Gotta get up to speed on that, thanks
Lane, I have been researching the net for 6 weeks straight to set my new SMO strategy. There is so much out there, I think I could make it a full-time job.
I'm looking forward to trying/comparing BOTH sites! Thanks for sharing this great info.
Lane - Thanks to Active Rain, I have started a posterous blog and am having fun with it. Know a little bit about Tumblr. A Tumblr person made a presentation at Real Estate Connect and I remember thinking how similar that they were to Posterous. I love the email function with Posterous. Great stuff !
Lane - Thanks for the reminder. I have a tumblr account from years ago, and just haven't used it.
Thank you all - I am using both now and find that they both have their advantages... and limitations.
I've known about Tumblr for a couple of years but have never used it for some reason.Maybe longer... I have a Posterous blog but forget about posting to it for months at a time. Even though I daily get everyone's updates, including yours I never post anything to my posterous, I did yesterday.
I missed this...
Hi Lane,
Have you figured out a way to get your Posterous blog to feed to your Active Rain blog or the other way around?
Would love some feedback on that idea.
Thanks
