Looking Out From the Garage: If you have cool tools... you need a cool box!

If you have cool tools... you need a cool box!

Kobalt Tool Chest/Cabinet Combo LWTB08-5319DWandering through Lowe's I ran across their flagship Kobalt Tool Box. It has been out for a little while, but the local store hadn't been displaying it... and it is kind of cool.

I had two thoughts:

  • Ok, this is cool.
  • This is a bit gimmicky.

Basically, this is a 53" cabinet chest combo with a few added items. The added items are a fridge and a stereo (with iPod connectivity). No doubt, this is a big box. Aside from being 53" wide and 24" deep, it is also almost 70" tall. The fridge isn't that big, 1.6 cubic feet, but it is convenient to drop a 12 pack of your favorite beverage. There is also a power strip on the side with 4 outlets.

However, it is also a bit pricey at $1898. Although I see it listed online as being $1600. But, when compared to Snap-On, Mac or other professional boxes... even the Craftsman 56" box, it looks like a deal. The Craftsman 56" combo (cabinet and chest) comes in over $6500. The premium boxes are more... of course I will certainly concede that the Snap-On and Mac units are EXTREMELY well constructed.

Lane - Kind of reminds me of a grill.  I agree it is a bit pricey, but what do I know when it comes to tools.  After all, you are the Garage Guy:)  Seems like a pretty useful mechanism though.

Oh Lane....scare me! I know so many people in my car club that would be all over this! I'm not sure that is a good thing.

I need a toolbox like that for real estate! Oh yeah, right, I'm typing on it right now....ACTIVE RAIN!

Speaking of rain......Come on Lake Lanier!

OK, Lane.  I will definitely NOT be showing my husband this, thank you very much!  He already has two huge rolling toolboxes that don't seem to hold his tools (he's not a put it away where it belongs kind of guy).  This has too many bells and whistles and is way too shiny to turn away from for sure!

Lane, I love things with lots of compartments and gadgets! I could use this for my scrapbooking. (sorry to ruin the guy image!)

They have to build it out of stainless steel to keep it from rusting from all the guys that come by and drool on it.

Jason - It is a cool box.  I get the grill thing, though.

Thom - I can think of a few people that would happily park this in the spot their wife's car currently occupies...  I can't because I would want it inside.

Heather - This is cheap...  A similar sized box from Snap-On or Mac would cost 5 times as much...

Linda - You scrapbook in the garage?  Need to keep a cold beverage nearby?  Cool. ;^ )

Terry - Are you drooling?  I stood and stared for a few minutes...

Lane that is a very cool box ....I could use another one most of my tool boxes are craftsman...but I do have a Mac that was built in 1960 and still is in good shape for almost 50 years old....I would have a hard time hiding that shiny box from Becky all my other boxes are red and they blend together....peace zane

Zane - I have a Harbor Frieght roll-cab.  For just over $300 I couldn't say no.  It is a 42" box I think.  I also have a 26" Craftsman roll-cab.  I could use another box...
