Today the baby turned one. It is a big day.
The car seats got turned around, cake was served... it was a good day.
My mother lived in Virginia, and she was unable to make the trip down for the birthday celebration. Of course, now she is really wishing that she had made the trip, since Sunday is going to be such a big day for Garrett. But she was able to be part of the festivities... And it didn't take rocket science to do it.
We picked up an inexpensive wireless enabled IP camera. Basically, when the camera is fired up, it is on our network and can be accessed via the internet (with the right numeric address).
So, for the duration of the present opening and while he was playing in cake, we ran the camera as well as a speakerphone. It was actually easier for her to get up and running that a regular webcam... and with better quality.
We also use the same camera in the playroom the rest of the time so we can look in on the kids without distracting them,,, or Gail can look in from the office on her day there.
Earlier I was talking to Midori Miller on the phone. I commented to her that we live in amazing times. For about $50 we had a closed circuit broadcast of a birthday party for the family. Together with our VoIP phone... no long distance charge... she had sound and picture.
Could you have imagined this 20 years ago?
