Gwinnett County Property Taxes... Going Up...

On Tuesday, the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners approved a millage rate increase for redisents of Gwinnett County.  It will be effective with the March, 2010, Property Tax bill.

The old millage rate was 10.97, while the new rate is an increase of 21% to 13.25.  This is the first millage increase in Gwinnett County in 13 years, but the county has experienced value growth over that period increasing the amount of the county budget.

Here are a few more sources with a little more about the story.

The increase represents about $160 for an average $200,000 home.  Of course the total tax bill will depend on where in the county the house is located, whether it is inside city limits or in an unincorporated part of the county.  Homestead and Senior Exemptions also come into play.

(pre-) Earth Day Round-up from Gwinnett County, GA

Recycling Bank of Gwinnett Grand OpeningThere was a LOT going on in Gwinnett County, GA this weekend in celebration of the upcoming Earth Day.  Two of the coolest events were the Grand Opening of the Recycling Bank of Gwinnett in Duluth and the Earth Day Celebration at the Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center in Buford.

After T-ball in the morning, we headed up to the Recycling Bank of Gwinnett to see what was going on with the Grand Opening.  They had tours and displays and fun stuff for the kids.

I know... it doesn't sound like the most glamorous event, but it was a lot of fun.  It was cool to see the technology inside the buildings.  Currently most trash carriers only handle 7 items for recycling.  The RBG is trying to push that to 35 items.  The have the ability to hold 250 garbage truck loads of recyclables while they are processed.  Cardboard, aluminum, paper and many types of plastic are all easily classified, separated and packaged fro shipment.  This can help reduce the loads on the current landfill system, as well as save money for the county.

Earth Day Celebration at GEHCAfter an enlightening view inside the RBG, we headed out towards Buford to visit the Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center for their Earth Day Celebration.  We were running late and much of the crowd had already started to dissipate.  Some of the vendors and exhibitors had also packed it up.  However, there was still a lot to do, especially for Garrett.  At only 4 (almost 5) much of the science and ecology are lost on him, but he likes to walk the trails and visit the water room.

Personally, I love seeing the technology that makes the center one of the few LEED Silver Certified buildings in the southeast.  The 'Green Roof' and the water feature which functions as a heat exchanger are a couple of the items that top the cool list.  They have achieved a 35% reduction in energy usage for the center through the use of design, water feature, the planted roof and daylight utilization.

Either of these would be a great field trip.

Give a dog a break... a cat, too...

There are victims of the foreclosure crisis and the financial troubles that DON'T have the ability to call their Congressman for a bailout.  They just have to cope.

They are the dogs and cats that are left behind.  They are the ones that are surrendered because their owners can't afford to take care of them anymore.  The shelters are getting flooded with animals... and some of them are drowning in the tide, and the red ink.

I ran across a story today about the ASPCA shelter in Suwanee.  They are unable to accept animals because they are out of space, and they are soon to be 100% out of space because they are out of money.  Unfortunately, they aren't alone.  Across the country, shelters are getting less in donations and grants, and are getting more animals.

Luckily, the ASPCA shelter is a no-kill shelter, and they will work to find foster families for the pets there if they lose their space, but they won't be able to take in any more pets... and those pets may end up someplace that doesn't give them the same chance.

Normally at Christmas, they have more people adopting pets, but this year is different.

While you are thinking of the kids that need a Santa, remember that they aren't the only ones.

Oh Garbage!... or not so much...

Back on November 15th I wrote a post about the new waste management plan for unincorporated Gwinnett County.

Well, scratch that...

The old trash plan is now THE trash plan.  Some of the trash haulers that didn't win the contract sued.  The plan isn't happening yet.  A judge has issued a restraining order against Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful implementing the plan as of January 2nd, which had been the target date.

So, everything will remain as normal...

If you have any questions, a call center has been set up at 770-822-7141.  They will begin operations answering constituent questions on Tuesday, December 23rd.  There will also be information available on Gwinnett County's website

Most of the questions will revolve around billing I think.  Bills for the new haulers went out earlier this month.

Apparently there are questions revolving around the way the contracts were awarded.  I think that we WILL see the plan implemented in some fashion.  The county is making a tremendous push forward, especially on recycling.  Currently there are 7 types of materials that are recycled, but under the new plan there will be 35 materials.

Stay tuned...

As soon as I run across new information, I will certainly post it.
