Looking Out From the Garage

Time to start thinking about Mud 4 Blood

It’s that time of year again.  Mud 4 Blood time.  And this year is going to ROCK!  We have made a few changes, and the event promises to blow the previous events out of the water.  You don’t have to be a 4wheeler or off-road enthusiast to come out and have fun… we’ll take anyone’s blood. From Wikipedia

If you haven’t heard of M4B before, it is an annual gathering of people (primarily) from Atlanta area 4 wheel drive clubs.  It is hosted by the GBR 4WD Club, and benefits LifeSouth’s blood collection efforts.  But you don’t have to be a member of a 4wd club to come out and enjoy the festivities… in fact, if you aren’t currently a member of a club, we would love to have you come out and enjoy the day… or part of the day.

Here is a rundown of some of the cool stuff we have planned:

  • Kid’s games
  • Truck Show - and these trucks might not be pretty… just pretty cool
  • Car Show - If you have a car and want to show it, we’ll let you
  • Free lunch for blood donors
  • Silent auction - benefiting Save Tellico
  • Rugged Ridge manufacturer’s Scratch & Dent Sale - make an offer of new parts… slightly damaged…
  • Free raffle for blood donors… and there is a LOT of stuff going into the raffle
  • And Dixie Speedway, the host for this year’s event, is giving away a FREE ticket to any race on their schedule for the first 300 donors
  • Finally, the next day we will be hosting a ride to benefit Breast Cancer research.  Donations accepted for that ride

There might even be a live band… a kid’s inflatable jumper… and other last minute surprises. Visit the M4B website for more details…

The minimalist basics:

April 25th
Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, GA
10:00am until 4:00pm (get there early… avoid the rush)
FREE - except for the stuff you want to pay for… like cool parts and silent auction items.

I hope to see you there… I’ll be in a red GBR t-shirt.  Most anyone will be able to point me out…

Just have to brag a little...

Ok, I just have to brag a little bit here.

My 1 year old will officially be 1 year old on Friday.  We are having a party for him on Friday here at the house... and we are also doing something on Sunday... that has morphed beyond control.  And the latest morph is pretty cool.

We were going to take the 4 year old and some of his friends to a hockey game on Sunday.  He is a good Big Brother, and he has wanted to take friends to games all year.  So, we thought it would be fun for some of his friends to go to a game and this Sunday seemed like a good option.  We were going to make it a bit of a party for Jackson... just using Garrett's friends as the party-goers.  Garrett Skating Backwards

--Cool thing #1.

And then the Thrashers announced their "Cross Ice Jamboree" for the kids that have been skating cross ice all year.  It will be a couple hours before the game.  Some of the friends expressed an interest in watching the Jamboree, which is basically a practice session... and there might be some players participating.

--Cool thing #2.

And then we got a call this week from the Thrashers...  They have asked Garrett to play in a scrimmage during the period break between the 1st and 2nd periods.  So, in front of a bunch of his buds, he gets to not only practice on NHL game ice, but to actually play a short (5 minute) scrimmage on NHL game ice in front of up to 15,000 people.

--Cool thing #3.

The part that blows a little is that he really isn't good.  He doesn't know that, and his friends probably won't know either, because they'll have a terrible time trying to figure out which short guy he is... (He'll likely be the smallest one).  I'm just hoping he can keep his concentration up for 5 minutes and go after the puck.

Regardless, I will be one VERY proud Dad.

Is a Trolley what Atlanta needs on Peachtree?

The latest plan to make Atlanta the place to live and visit (we're talking about the City of Atlanta, not the Metro Area) is to build a trolley system.

The proponents argue that the project would be ready to go quickly, would create jobs and would lower traffic on Peachtee Street... especially in the middle of the day (the people that work along P'tree might be able to hop a trolley instead of driving to lunch).  This would reduce pollution and provide a cleaner transport than busses.

Detractors argue that this isn't the most brilliant way to spend $81,000,000.  With the planned 3.6 miles of track, that equates to $22.5M per mile.  Compare this to the Disneyland Monorail System, which cost $1,000,000/mile in 1959 (that would be just under $7.3M/mile in 2009 dollars).  Further, those that think a trolley would be a good idea think that connecting the Georgia World Congress Center, GA Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola and downtown hotels would be better.  This would allow tourists and convention attendees to use the system.

So, what do you think?  Is this a good use of $81,000,000 from the stimulus bill?

It was pretty cool...

You may remember that yesterday I mentioned the World of Wheels.  Well, today was the day.  Two dads, three boys... two 4 year olds and a two year old.  And 10,000 of our favorite people.  (Yes, that means they had a pretty good crowd...)Airbrushed Door

I haven't been to the WoW for several years.  I've never been a "gotta see it every year" person anyway... I don't think there is enough turnover in the show cars, but I think it is safe to say that we will be back next year.  The show is bigger than I remember, and the attention span of the kids was a little short to make it all of the way through.  Werewolf Fender

But, as stated yesterday, even if you aren't a serious car guy (or his kid), the World of Wheels is a good time.  The people watching is exceptional... from the Rat Rod people to the Pure Restoration folks, and from the Low Rider peeps to the Racers, it is a highly diverse group... Bikers, too.  The design trends are interesting.  In decor there is "shabby chic" and in cars there are Rat Rods.  Resto-mods are older cars that are conservatively updated, while pure restorations are more researched than many history textbooks.  Historic race cars are making their comeback, dressed out in their former glory.  Thrilled...

One disappointment was that Vince, the Sham-wow guy, wasn't there.  Sham-wow had a booth... but it wasn't Vince.  Also present were SpongeBob SquarePants, a couple of American Gladiators, both the new and old K.I.T.T.s from the Knight Rider series'.

BTW, a couple of the photos were shot by Garrett.  I gave him a camera for the day, and let him shoot ANYTHING he wanted with NO instruction, direction or advice.

Here is the link to the set of pictures Garrett took.  I'm pretty impressed.  Aside from the two pictures that he obviously shot in the pouch, no other pictures were edited out of the group.
