Looking Out From the Garage

Stormwatch!?!

[rant on]

I have had the various news channels playing in the background for a large part of the last 24 hours.  Occasionally watching, sometimes listening... often ignoring.  And I have noticed something humorous...

The politicians can't get a word in edgewise...

Seriously... unless they stand in the winds of Hurricane Ike, they are NOT in the news cycle.  Obama could have had Jesus descend from the heavens for a campaign appearance... no news cameras.  McCain could have had Lincoln come back from the dead to endorse him... still no news cameras.

Instead...

Right now, Anderson Cooper is standing in water up to his waist in a pair of waders.  A tire is gently floating by (and if you think that there wasn't an intern involved in the procurement of the tire and the "chance happenstance" of it wafting by, you need to seriously examine your gullibility gene.  I wouldn't be shocked if the intern is UNDER it making sure that it moves at the most advantageous speed.

And...

Geraldo getting washed off of the seawall early yesterday?  It was real, but one of the nearby firement should have smacked him with a chair for that little stunt. Maybe he knew that the "other guys" would need to try to out-do him.  Don't worry, he got knocked in the head with storm debris after midnight... just his head, no damage.

And MSNBC?

I think that one of the "balanced" anchors there might have mentioned that Obama has a plan to stop Hurricanes from affecting "working class" people, and limiting their effects to just the rich.  Then he explained how hearing Obama about it made his leg tingle.

Unfortunately, nobody knows about McCain's response.  Fox News was the only network that might play it, but they were busy showing reruns of Geraldo getting his butt kicked by waved and wind.

Lastly...

For CNN, because they have made more stupid comments in the last few minutes than Fox did all morning...

  • A pick-up truck with 33" tall tires is not a "monster truck."
  • Yes, water does flow downhill.  Explaining for three (3) minutes that the water that surged over the seawall on Galveston Island won't go back over the wall, but instead will have to flow back down other ways pretty much marked you as a mouth-reader.
  • There is NO reason for Anderson Cooper to stand in the water for an hour to deliver his broadcast.  I mean, really...  Why?
  • How many times in three minutes can you say "gouging"?

And not for CNN, but for the rest of the world...

  • NOAA, I know that you needed to not be conservative, but you look like idiots for saying that being on Galveston Island meant "certain death"
  • Hey, Maxine Waters, if you took over the oil companies, you wouldn't have the refineries back online until the next hurricane season.  People think there is "gouging" now?  At least there is gas available most places...
  • Nobody needs to shed a tear for the oil companies, they are big kids, but it looks like Ike will cost them between $8B and $18B.  A few more storms like that, and we could be talking about real money...
