Looking Out From the Garage

Did Patton need all of this crap to fight across Germany?

We are freshly back from a long weekend in Sevierville, TN.  We stayed at the lovely Wilderness Resort at the Smokies.  It is the home of the Wild Water Dome, which is supposed to be the largest indoor water park in the region... and it IS pretty big.  Good thing it is indoors, too, as it was a chilly weekend and we really enjoyed playing in the various water features.

But, as I was pulling the 2,000 pound cart, loaded with everything a 5 year old or a 1/5 year old could need for a life on the road, I began to think of other trips...

  • When I was around 13, my dad and I "camped" in a '76 Aspen Station Wagon for three days while cruising the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  We were able to roll out sleeping bags and sleep in the back of the care without having to move gear to the front seat...
  • My friend Pat Johnson and I drove to Moab, UT and went 4 wheeling while delivering a Jeep to Salt Lake City.  For 5 days of driving and playing, and being prepped for heat, cold and lots of time outdoors, I had a large duffel and a medium duffle.
  • The NAR Convention took me to Vegas for five days a couple of years ago.  I took a rolling duffle and a computer backpack.

For this trip (Friday to Sunday) we had a cooler, four suitcases, two computer bags, 6 "miscellaneous" bags (reuseable grocery bags), a fanny pack, a pack and play, another cooler, a box of diapers and my wife's purse.  Despite the kids being half the size of a "regular" person... combined... they needed twice as much space for clothes.  And then the support crap...

How do people travel with thse small people with a small car?  We have a minivan and while it wasn't packed to the rafters, it was well packed.  For our trip to Florida last year... it WAS packed to the gills.

So... other notes?

Hit WonderWorks.  They have locations in other cities as well.  Both kids enjoyed various aspects... but I think Gail and I liked it more...

Plan to spend some time in Smoky Mountain National Park...  We didn't get to this time, but we have both spent a good deal of time in the park...

Hit one of the multi-level go-cart tracks along the US441 strip.  They are a lot of fun...

... when the camera battery is recharged, I'll try to post up some pictures...

THIS is a Commercial. Wow...

I'd watch this on TV several times in a row. (and this is NOT real estate related...)

Up until a few years ago, the American Rally Series (Rally America) had regular television coverage.  But that has dried up.  Too many college football games I guess.  But auto racing needs sponsors.  And sponsors need visibility to make it worthwhile.

Ken Block is one of America's Rally aces.  He is bold, brash and talented.  He is also very creative.  He is delivering something of value for his sponsors... in a new and creative way.  He has done several videos featuring his rally cars, from World Record setting jumps to amazing driving visuals.

This is his newest...  An infomercial for one of his sponsors.  They chew up a few minutes at the begining...  and then it gets REALLY cool.

As a bonus, I included the first video...  Amazing.

I should be a TV host...

Have you seen the BBC TV show Top Gear?  It is one of my favorite shows.  And with 350 million viewers around the world, I'm not the only fan.  Top Gear is a great show, too.  Even Mrs. Garage Guy enjoys (grudgingly) a show sometimes.

The cast of the show includes Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, James May and The Stig.  But, it could just as easily include me and a few of my friends.  Seriously.  The crazy stunts, freaky fabrication and love of all things automotive are alive and well with us. Pat, Patrick, Tim and I have had adventures... and with a show like Top Gear, we could have some more.

If only the video was running when:

  • Pat and I barnstormed across the country 2000 miles in a Jeep that could only do the speed limit when we were drafting off of a semi.
  • When Patrick and I rolled a Jeep and then drove home without top, doors or windshield... on New Year's Day.
  • When Pat and Tim exploded a fire extinguisher under the dash of Pat's Jeep.\

The hits could keep rolling...

Here are a few from the show...

the 3rd most glorious sound... and the 4th...

There is just no other way to say it. This thing makes an incredible sound. It idles like a fashion student ripping burlap, and then at full tilt, it makes magic. If I had a car that made that sound, EVERYONE could see me on the news... And there would be scores of angry police officers because I would HAVE to run with it...

And the cool thing is that it could certainly outrun the chopper, and almost outrun the radio. But then there is that sound. The only description that owould go out is "You'll know it when you hear it." It is #3

The other sound I like is more grating... annoying... but I still like it. It comes in #4.

Of course... the big question would be about #1 and #2. I'll never say which is which, but those are the sounds of my boys laughing... Any Dad can tell you that there is no sweeter sound.
